Official Launch of the Coalition for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)
On October 24, 2003, the Coalition for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) was officially launched at a formal gala dinner, held under the auspices of the Governor General Sir Daniel Williams, at the Rex Grenadian Resort. With cocktails and a rolling video presentation to start the evening, the atmosphere tingled with excitement as hundreds gathered to celebrate the fruition of a hard-earned vision to bring together global community leaders who advocate and mobilize resources to enhance the quality of life for persons with disabilities in Grenada.
Dinner commenced with brief remarks given by honored guests. Seated at the head table were Justice Monica Joseph, inaugural Chairperson of CRPD, Ministry Representative from Social Services Permanent Secretary Mrs. Eunice Sandy-David, Mr. Ray Roberts, President of the Board of the Grenada National Council of the Disabled (GNCD), Mr. Walter Stockton, CEO of Independent Group Home Living (IGHL) and Dr. Charles Modica, Chancellor of St. George’s University (SGU). Special recognition was given to key persons involved throughout the year-long process of forming the Coalition, particularly to Steering Committee Chair Dr. Michael Daine of SGU. Guests then proceeded to dance the night away to live band music in festive Caribbean spirit.
CRPD is spearheaded by three organizations — the Grenada National Council of the Disabled (GNCD), St. George’s University (SGU), and Independent Group Home Living (IGHL). Through collaboration on major projects, our organizations have worked in bringing together concerned citizens for dialogue on understanding disabilities and elevating societal accessibility needs.
