Building A Nation Workshop Oct. 2003 The Grenada National Council of the Disabled (GNCD), in partnership with St. George’s University (SGU) and Independent Group Home Living (IGHL), hosted a 2-day training workshop on October 21-22, 2003 titled “Building A Nation Through Disabilities.” Drawing an overflowing crowd of direct care providers and organizational administrators in Grenada, topics covered included multidisciplinary approaches to assessing disabilities, developing behavior modification programs, utilizing adaptive equipment to increase accessibility and reviewing actual case studies of Grenadians living with disabilities. An international group of workshop presenters came together to facilitate this training workshop. Dr. Michael Daine, Head of Counseling at SGU, and Dr. Barbara Carey-Shaw, Director of Clinical Services at IGHL, opened with an overview of disabilities, joined by Ms. Joyce Herman, Director of Residential Facilities at IGHL. Mr. Frank Lombardi, Assistant to the CEO of IGHL, shared insights into public relations and winning community and business involvement. The highlight of the workshop, voiced by the over 80 attendees, was the case studies session led by Mr. Donald Shaw, a physical therapist with over 25 years of experience. Focusing on 4 Grenadians with physical and/or developmental disabilities, Mr. Shaw led an expert team in analyzing and explaining specific nuances to each case study as well as potential treatment therapies. This workshop builds upon GNCD, SGU and IGHL’s joint commitment to education and training in Grenada, an initiative started in 2002. Special thanks go to key supporters: Mr. Walter Stockton, CEO of IGHL, Mr. John Kopycinski, Business Administrator of SGU, Ms. Jeanne Pascal, Senate Administrator of SGU, Mrs. Margaret Fortunato, Assistant Director of Operations/Office of Clinical Studies, Mr. William Fortunato, Parent Advocate and Supporter of IGHL, and the U. S. Peace Corps.
