Official Launch of the Coalition for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) (posted 02/2004)

On October 24, 2003, the Coalition for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) was officially launched at a formal gala dinner, held under the auspices of the Governor General Sir Daniel Williams, at the Rex Grenadian Resort.  With cocktails and a rolling video presentation to start the evening, the atmosphere tingled with excitement as hundreds gathered to celebrate the fruition of a hard-earned vision to bring together global community leaders who advocate and mobilize resources to enhance the quality of life for persons with disabilities in Grenada. 

Building A Nation Workshop Oct. 2003 (posted 02/2004)

The Grenada National Council of the Disabled (GNCD), in partnership with St. George’s University (SGU) and Independent Group Home Living (IGHL), hosted a 2-day training workshop on October 21-22, 2003 titled “Building A Nation Through Disabilities.”  Drawing an overflowing crowd of direct care providers and organizational administrators in Grenada, topics covered included multidisciplinary approaches to assessing disabilities, developing behavior modification programs, utilizing adaptive equipment to increase accessibility and reviewing actual case studies of Grenadians living with disabilities.

Accessible Office Utilized by New IMANI Trainee (posted 06/03)

The Grenada National Council of the Disabled welcomed a new IMANI Project trainee to its office during mid-May 2003.  Ms. Neila Duncan, who also happens to use a wheelchair, joined the now fully accessible GNCD office...  

2003 Office Rededication Ceremony (posted 04/03)

The Grenada National Council of the Disabled (GNCD) celebrated the rededication of its office in a grand ribbon-cutting ceremony on 14th February 2003.  After months of renovation through generous funding provided by New York-based Independent Group Home Living (IGHL), GNCD revealed the imperative measures it has taken, such as widening doorways, installing handrails and constructing a ramp, to an overflowing crowd that left standing room only for latecomers...

Collaborative Sale of Work (posted 04/03)

A highly successful collaborative venture between disabilities organizations and local businesses took place during the February 2003 Clinical Faculty Conference of St. George’s University (SGU).  Invited by SGU to be the premier provider of handcrafted Grenadian products, the Grenada National Council of the Disabled mobilized its sister organizations and selected three unique businesses to form a partnership for this exclusive event...

On Wednesday, 18 December 2002, the Grenada National Council of the Disabled (GNCD) hosted its Annual General Meeting and Christmas Cheer Programme at The Arena, Plains, St. Patrick’s, attended by over 200 constituents and guests.  Donations from corporate sponsors as well as individual benefactors made it possible for GNCD to hand out food hampers to almost 100 families this holiday season in addition to sending care packages to families on Carriacou...

Disability, Family and the Community Workshop (posted 12/02)

The Grenada National Council of the Disabled (GNCD) jointly sponsored the Disability, Family and the Community workshop on 17 October 2002 with St. George’s University (SGU).  Held at the Caribbean House on the True Blue campus, the workshop proposed methods to improve social understanding and conditions for persons with disabilities through break-out sessions and presentations from field experts.  A major highlight of the workshop also happened to be a surprise event, where Walter Stockton, Chief Executive Officer of IGHL, sent representatives Dr. Barbara Carey-Shaw and parent advocate William Fortunato to present GNCD with a US $10,000 check to assist the Council with renovating its office to be made accessible to people with disabilities...

2002 Schoolbooks Programme (posted 09/02)

For the seventh year running, the Grenada National Council of the Disabled (GNCD) distributed schoolbooks to children who have disabilities or who have parents with disabilities.  Since the inception of GNCD’s Schoolbooks Programme, over fifteen  students have benefited.  This year’s schoolbooks handing over ceremony took place on August 28, 2002 at GNCD’s office on Scott Street.  The books were handed out by GNCD’s president Mr. Ray Roberts, who encouraged the students to make good use of the books to achieve a sound education...
